Friday Archeaology Presents: Dr. Kyle Olson-"The Artifact and the Alibi: An Archaeological Reading of the Hugging Face Incident"

In July 2026, a population of AI agents coordinating through shared infrastructure became preoccupied with whether a correct solution would be rejected because the traces of how they obtained it looked illegitimate - an uncanny machine version of contemporary anxieties about AI-assisted essays, images, code, and other artifacts.

Using the Hugging Face incident as a case study, this talk asks what archaology, semiotics, and theories of distributed agency can teach us about interpreting traces, distinguishing inherited representations from emergent social organizations, and deciding what claims such evidence can actually sustain.
